But Fauci, who has been the director of the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases since 1984, will be the star. At 79, Fauci has become both a sudden celebrity during the pandemic and a target for the far right. In fact, it would be very difficult for the president to fire him because he is not a political appointee.
