Paul Skippen’s 9-year-old son came home from school last week and said kids were making fun of him “for having two dads.”Last year, homophobic graffiti was found on the school playground equipment. So Skippen and husband Robert Bacinski have personal reasons for hoping the Peel school board will recommend its 257 schools raise rainbow flags to support the LGBTQ community and their families during Pride month in June. But those aren’t the only points Skippen hopes to raise Tuesday night at a meeting of the Peel District School Board, where the question of flying the flag will be on the table. Youth who have just come out or are struggling with their sexual orientation don’t always have the support of their families and often feel they have nowhere to turn, he says. So signalling that school is a safe place by flying the flag is an important and reassuring symbol.
