Transformer wins Rogers Audience Award for Best Canadian Documentary at Hot Docs Festival


The 2018 Hot Docs festival, which wrapped up on the weekend in Toronto, hit an attendance record with an estimated 223,000 people going to 471 screenings of 247 films at the 11-day event. On Sunday, the $50,000 Rogers Audience Award for Best Canadian Documentary went to director Michael Del Monte for Transformer, which tells the story of a world-record powerlifter transitioning from male to female. The film also won the Emerging Canadian Filmmaker Award for Del Monte and the Hot Docs Audience Award, voted on by filmgoers. The top five included The Accountant of Auschwitz (Canadian Matthew Shoychet); Won’t You Be My Neighbor? The festival handed out 13 awards and $272,000 in cash and prizes.
