Failing A&P shows spark new opportunity for axemen

Axemen and woodchoppers are set to put their skills to the test during a new Putaruru event this weekend (file photo). The demise of A&P shows around the country is set to see another Waikato event hit the chopping block. World champion axemen and woodchoppers will put their skills to the test during the first McKenzie and Ridley Axemen's Carnival at the New Zealand Timber Museum in Putaruru on Saturday from 9am. Organiser Shane Campbell said the Putaruru and Tokoroa axemen's clubs decided to organise the event due to many A&P shows, which traditionally featured their competitions, no longer being held. "A&P shows are slowly dying off around the country and it seems the further you go north the less shows you now get yet more guys are wanting to get around to competitions.
