Bogged down and exhausted, rescuers initially thought a cow found stranded in a Bay of Plenty river was dead. Staff from the Bay of Plenty Regional Council came across the jersey cow in the upper Kaituna River late last week while conducting their annual survey to assess flood risks. After lassooing the distressed cow, the team towed her 200 metres downstream to a boat ramp, travelling in reverse. Both the tow rope and the unsuspecting rescuer were recovered in one piece.
