more-inThe Supreme Court on Friday ordered that trial against Greyhound police force personnel allegedly involved in the gang rape of 11 women belonging to a vulnerable Adivasi tribe in Visakhapatnam be expedited and concluded in six months. Ms. Grover submitted that the 11 Adivasi women had finally approached the Supreme Court to realise their fundamental right to justice. On August 20, 2007, 11 women were allegedly gang-raped by the personnel of Greyhounds, the elite anti-Naxal force of A.P. According to the victims, 21 Greyhounds personnel, during their routine combing, swooped down on the village around 6 a.m. Though an FIR was lodged under Sections 376 (ii) (g) (gang rape) of the IPC and Section 3 (2) (V) of the SC, ST (Prevention of Atrocities Act) 1989, the trial remained a non-starter.
