It was the ideal opportunity for Jos Buttler to produce the type of attacking burst that could have proved he still belongs at Test level. Here he played second fiddle to Stokes and then had to consolidate when the vice-captain and Chris Woakes fell in successive balls. But when the time came to take the Test by the scruff of the neck he was found wanting. There was a brief glimpse of the Buttler England know and love so dearly when he displayed something like his full repertoire in hitting three boundaries in an over from West Indies' unlikely spin destroyer, Roston Chase, after tea. They all want Buttler to have a long-term role in Test cricket to go with his pivotal position as the next captain of the 50 over and Twenty20 teams.
