Around 67,000 elected representatives of the four local administrations will elect the chairman and members of the district councils. According to the EC, any Bangladeshi voter aged above 25 can contest in the district council polls. However, exception is made for the local representatives who can only vote but not run for election. In 1989, district council chiefs were elected through direct public voting in the three Chittagong hill districts, said Dhaka Divisional Regional Election Officer Mihir Sarwar Morshed. No district council election has been held since then.
