THE European Union will donate P49 million in humanitarian aid for displaced residents of Marawi City. The EU grant will be channeled through the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO). Pedro-Luis Rojo, Head of the East, South East Asia and Pacific Regional Office of ECHO, said the unprecedented violence in Marawi has caused tens of thousands of families to flee, leaving everything behind. The EU announced the aid grant more than a month after Malacañang declared that it would no longer accept “conditional” aid from the Union. But the Palace clarified that the rejection of aid would be made on a “case to case basis” and humanitarian aid for victims of calamities may still be accepted as long as it is “unconditional.”
