After pushback from Pape Ave. residents, the city is now recommending the downtown relief line run beneath Carlaw Ave., south of Gerrard, a route lined with mid-rise condo buildings rather than houses. Staff had previously recommended the preferred alignment for the subway run south from Danforth Ave. beneath Pape Ave., and turn west just south of Queen St. East. But some of the estimated 1,100 residents living in single-family houses on Pape, between Gerrard and Queen St. East, signed petitions asking staff to revisit the proposed route and consider Carlaw instead. Carlaw Ave., two streets west of Pape, is a minor arterial road with mid-rise residential and retail offices and an estimated population of about 2,500, according to 2016 census data. Councillor Paula Fletcher, who represents the area in Leslieville, asked staff to revisit the alignment.
