Defence never rests in Leafs’ shutout of Islanders

A nasty flu bug was supposed to have left the Leafs depleted and vulnerable on their blue line for their game against the New York Islanders on Wednesday night. Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Travis Dermott, right, is mobbed by teammates William Nylander, centre, and Zach Hyman after scoring his first career goal against the New York Islanders. Dermott has been impressing Leafs fans for three weeks since his callup, but Holl was something of an unknown. Kasperi Kapanen opened the scoring for the Leafs, which was another bonus for the Leafs on the night. The Leafs, meanwhile, kept the Islanders’ big producers — John Tavares, super rookie Matt Barzal, Anders Lee, and Josh Bailey — off the scoreboard.
