University of Calgary economist Trevor Tombe says Alberta’s unemployment rate, while concerning, is only one metric and shouldn’t be used in isolation to evaluate the province’s economy. Meanwhile Alberta’s unemployment rate, at 6.8 per cent in this report, continues to rank higher than any other province outside of the Maritimes and is above the national rate of 5.8 per cent. And I say that all the time, and it was true at the bottom of the recession,” Tombe said. “In terms of employment and jobs, this was not the worst recession that Alberta has seen — 1981 was worse, the (2008) financial crisis was worse.
