One law in particular – stipulating that bakeries in the French department of Aube cease operations for at least one day a week – has reportedly resulted in a hefty fine for one baker. To satisfy demand during tourist season, he chose to ply his wares every day of the week – and was fined €3000 (about $4,800) for the offence, according to French media. “A few days ago, I received registered mail from the labour inspector following a check of my bakery this summer,” Vaivre reportedly told L’Est Eclair. “I am told that I will be fined because I was open seven days a week. “In a tourist area, it seems essential that we can have businesses open every day during the summer,” Branle reportedly said.
