Country and party before self

Johnson had the standing to be Tory leader and PM, being one of the most experienced Conservative Party politicians. In choosing to lead the ‘Leave’ campaign, Johnson put his own ambition to be Prime Minister ahead of loyalty to his party leadership. One week after the Brexit, Johnson is out of the race to succeed Cameron. At what was anticipated to be the launch of his leadership campaign, Johnson declared he was not in the race because he did not believe he could provide the necessary unity or leadership for the party.
