The Queen has disclosed that her coronation was much more uncomfortable than previously thought as a heavy crown brought its “disadvantages” and she endured a “horrible” journey in the Gold State Coach. In a new documentary to mark the 65th anniversary of her accession to the throne, the Queen gives an unprecedented insight into her experience of being crowned on June 2, 1953. She left Buckingham Palace to travel four and a half miles to Westminster Abbey in two hours for the service. Filmed watching scenes of herself travelling in the coach, the Queen appears to confess that the ride had in part been horrible, suggesting that difficulties may have been down to a lack of suspension. “It’s only sprung on leather,” she said.
