Civic Theatre, He Waka Tuia require earthquake strengthening work

The Civic Theatre, and the building which houses He Waka Tuia, have both been labelled earthquake-prone, although the Invercargill Council says it will be largely business as usual for both. Council’s leisure and recreation group manager Steve Gibling said the assessments showed both buildings could still be occupied while the required work was carried out. The landlord is in the process of submitting design and consenting documents for the work required, Moogan said. “The elements of the He Waka Tuia building that place the building in the earthquake-prone building classification are a lack of connection between walls and the roof,” Moogan said. “Strengthening work will involve installation of plywood sarking to external roof elements and installation of fixings to roofing components and wall structures.”
