Yogendra Kumar, a policeman on duty near Income Tax Roundabout, rushed to rescue the labourers on hearing of the incident. Sources said they had entered the manhole without following safety norms prescribed by the municipal corporation. "We have to check whether safety norms such as workers wearing oxygen marks and other equipment were adhered to," PMC commissioner Abhishek Singh said. Pappu, a relative of Jitendra, said: "Both Jitendra and Deepu were earning members of their family. "PMC lacks safety equipment for its workers," PMC ward councillor Hemlata Verma said.
