Chinese firm blasts Kaya Kauma shrine, say worried elders

Elders from the Kaya Kauma in Ganze subcounty want Chinese Construction and Engineering Company stopped from destroying their holy shrine. Speaking at Kaya Kauma yesterday, Mbaruk said “the spirits at the shrine may move away”. The blasts have destroyed some of the caves inside our holy shrine and we fear if the firm is not stopped, it will destroy the whole forest.” Nema director Samuel Lopokoiyit said the firm was stopped from quarrying last month. Chairman Benson Mbaruk said the company quarries 300 metres from the Kaya’s main shrine. He said, “The quarrying is carried out within the shrine’s buffer zone.
