Chiang Mai airport sees traffic spike

Chiang Mai International Airport has recorded a new post-Covid high in passenger traffic, with daily numbers surpassing 36,000, as airlines added 69 extra and charter flights to accommodate Lunar New Year demand. Currently, the airport operates 33 routes -- 11 domestic and 22 international -- underscoring its role as northern Thailand's aviation hub and a key international gateway. Many Indonesian visitors travel from Medan to Penang before continuing to Hat Yai, with average spending of 5,000–6,000 baht per day. The event is expected to attract many international tourists, particularly from Malaysia. Songkhla deputy governor Jirawat Maneechot highlighted Hat Yai's strategic importance, citing its international airport, quality hotels and rich blend of Thai, Chinese and Muslim cultural influences.
