Champions League rule changes which could affect Manchester United and Liverpool

Reports suggest UEFA is ready to scrap the away goal rule, which has been the source of controversy for a number of years. The rule comes into effect if a tie is drawn on aggregate after two legs and has been a mainstay in UEFA competitions since being introduced in the late 1960s. (Image: X00102)The away goal rule was initially introduced to counter the disadvantages faced by travelling clubs such as travel stress, non-standardised match balls and lack of travelling supporters. However, modern football has meant the landscape of football has now significantly changed and as a result the need for an away goal rule is being seriously questioned. UEFA's competition director Giorgio Marchetti originally got the ball rolling regarding the change by confirming top international managers had expressed doubts about the necessity of the rule in the modern game.
