The victim, Moumita Ghosh Pal, an employee of the National Sample Survey Organisation, was not wearing a helmet, an officer of the Bidhannagar commissionerate said. "The Ultadanga-bound bus on the Barasat-Botanic Garden route was racing another bus and hit the two-wheeler while trying to overtake it," a witness said. "The woman fell off the two-wheeler and was crushed under the wheels of the bus." The apex court has also ruled that a health-care unit has to start treating an accident victim immediately after she or he is wheeled in. Hiranmay had bought the bike recently and would drop his wife to office whenever he had an afternoon shift, colleagues said.
