Clare Dyer The BMJA police investigation into alleged criminal negligence at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton is expected soon to start informing patients and relatives whose cases have been earmarked for scrutiny, as the probe enters a new phase. In Operation Bramber, Sussex Police and specialist officers from the National Crime Agency are looking into some 40 deaths and 65 cases of serious harm in neurosurgery and general surgery from 2015 to 2021.1 The allegations include that University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the hospital, failed to properly investigate mistakes, and most of the patients’ families are believed to be still unaware that their cases are among those being investigated.
