The long pending demand to upgrade Deonar abattoir has been finally approved by civic chief Ajoy Mehta. Forty years after the slaughterhouse was constructed, Rs1,066 crore has been allotted for its upgradation. To avoid any disruption in the meat supply to the city’s markets, temporary arrangements for business will be made inside the abattoir vicinity, said civic officials. Yogesh Shetye, general manager of the abattoir, said, “The work will be carried out in phases and the supply of meat will not be disrupted. Rais Shaikh, group leader of Samajwadi Party at BMC, said, “This is the first time the arrangements during Bakrid were excellent.”
