Auckland student handed $150 fine for not paying $1.05 train fare

A 16-year-old student has been slapped with a $150 fine for not paying a $1.05 train fare after he forgot his AT Hop card. Liam White, 16, caught a train from Swanson to Sturges Rd in West Auckland on May 23 but left his school bag, which contained his train card, at home. She called the train infringement "ridiculous", especially for a school student. "If it was me or another adult, I would happily take it but for a school student over a $1.05 fare? We're going to pay the original fine but it's the principle of it that is ridiculous.
