Niki Smith said the fire began from a pot being left on the stove. Seeing black smoke in the air as she drove home, Auckland woman Niki Smith hoped it wasn’t coming from her house. But as she pulled up and saw the fire brigade, she realised her two-storey house was burning. Smith said all her belongings – and her 2-year-old son’s belongings – were either destroyed in the fire or damaged by smoke.
