I ask because apparently newspaper readers have had a bellyful of opinions. But the largest newspaper chain in the United States has arrived at the opinion that opinion columns are turning off audiences and actually hurting subscriptions. “Readers don’t want us to tell them what to think,” Gannett’s big bosses lectured staff in an internal presentation, as reported by the Washington Post. I’ve never understood why any newspaper should tell readers how to vote. And my particular breed is raising hackles, to hear Gannett tell it.
