Turns out that was a bit optimistic, and in one of IGN’s infinite Bungie interviews, we have a definitive answer. When asked if our protagonist would remain mute throughout the entire game, director Luke Smith simply said “yep.”Sigh. Destiny 2 has done nothing but promise improvements to the game’s story since its inception, but for me, a mute protagonist is an enormous step backward in this area, and threatens to derail what other improvements are being made. But another problem with Destiny 2 is that this decision doesn’t really make you a mute protagonist because instead, it makes your Ghost, Nolanbot, your voice instead. I will reserve judgement about Destiny 2’s storytelling until I see more of the game, but the confirmation of a mute protagonist really puts me off from the outset.
