A total of 68,000 students who sat the 2016 KCSE exam will be selected to join public universities. The 14 private universities will accommodate 20,000 government-sponsored students, while 34 public universities will get 68,000 students for 2017-18. In 2016, the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service selected 74,389 government-sponsored students to join public universities for 2016-17. In an apparent reference to the equity that should be afforded to public and private universities, Matiang’i said there should be no dichotomy between public and private universities. “KUCCPS will place students as per their individual choices, be it in public or private universities,” Matiang’i said.
