6,620 Chinese confirmed to be sick with bacterial disease from animals

Most commonly, people are infected by eating raw or unpasteurized dairy products. Sometimes, the bacteria that cause brucellosis can spread through the air or through direct contact with infected animals. The infections were caused by the use of expired disinfectant between July and August 2019 at a factory that produces animal brucellosis vaccines. As of Wednesday, 337 people received compensation from the factory, which allocated 10 million yuan (about US$1.5 million) to a special account. Brucella, transmitted by contact with infected livestock including cattle and sheep or by eating unpasteurized dairy products, can cause brucellosis, also known as Mediterranean fever.
