Photo: AFPKolkata: At least 36 people were killed after a bus operated by West Bengal Transport Corp. plunged into a canal at Daulatabad in Murshidabad district on Monday morning. Chief minister Mamata Banerjee, who rushed to the site, around 250 km from Kolkata, announced a compensation of Rs5 lakh each for the families of the deceased and Rs1 lakh for those seriously injured. Following the accident, a mob attacked the police and vandalised police vehicles, alleging the police arrived late at the site of the accident. The police had to baton-charge the mob and fired teargas shells.
