22 arrested for allowing foreign fishermen into Malaysian waters, RM1.9 million seized and RM2 million in accounts frozen

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) yesterday arrested 22 individuals, including a Vietnamese woman with a Datuk title, for alleged graft involving the encroachment by foreign fishermen into Malaysian waters. MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Dzulkifli Ahmad said the agency also seized RM1.9 million in cash and has frozen 44 accounts worth RM2 million. He said the suspects were arrested in a joint operation with the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) called Ops Armada, to address the issue of encroachment of Malaysian waters by foreign fishermen. "The suspects were believed to have been involved in a syndicate which allows foreign fishermen, especially Vietnamese boats, to encroach into Malaysian waters. They include five MMEA officers and one from the Fisheries Department, while the nine locals were boat operators and middlemen.
