more-inPUDUCHERRYEleven political parties, including the Congress and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, and several Tamil outfits have announced a dawn-to-dusk bandh on Friday to condemn the death of people in police firing at Thoothukudi. The Congress, the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the Communist Party of India, the Indian Union Muslim League, the Pattali Makkal Katchi and other party representatives attended a meeting convened by the DMK on Wednesday to discuss the bandh plan. Representatives who attended the meeting slammed the police action against people while holding a rally demanding the closure of Sterlite Copper, a Vedanta group unit, at Thoothukudi. Meanwhile, Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi, in a message, said an alert had been sounded to all agencies to ensure security of people and property. “All are alerted to ensure law and order and protection to public property, especially that of the central government,” the message said.
