Daily coronavirus cases count climbs to 1,447
July 15, 2021 08:35 pmThe Ministry of Health reported that another 480 persons have tested positive for Covid-19 today, increasing the daily count of Coronavirus cases to 1,447. Accordingly, the total number of Covid-19 positive cases confirmed in the country thus far moves to 280,543 with this. Currently a total of 22,979 patients infected with the virus are under medical care while the tally of recoveries has risen to 253,953. Meanwhile another 50 coronavirus deaths have been reported within the last 24 hours.

City university Programme launched; President calls for proposals, not protests
COLOMBO (News 1st); President Gotabaya Rajapaksa on Thursday (15) stated that those who protest against educational reforms should come up with proposals for a modern education system instead of advocating political motives. President Rajapaksa launched an official website (www.cu.ac.lk) to introduce the City university Programme as a concept at the Presidential Secretariat to coincide with the World Youth Skills Day – 2021. Its first university is planned to be established in the next few weeks, in Pinnawala area in Kegalle District. The President at the launch emphasized the need to take steps to expedite the implementation of the City University Programme commencing from Kegalle, throughout the island. The President said that his objective of the ‘City University’ Programme is to create a person who can directly contribute to the economy or who possesses the knowledge to engage in self-employment at the end of the degree course.

Netflix is planning an expansion into video games, report claims
Netflix is planning to add video games to its massive library of films and TV shows within the next 12 months, a new report claims. The streaming giant has just hired Mike Verdu, a former executive of Electronic Arts (EA), the successful video games firm, to lead the expansion into games. Netflix is tapping the video games market and will release the first games on its platform in the next year, reports revealVerdu reportedly joins Netflix as 'vice president of game development' and reports to chief operating officer Greg Peters. 'Video games give Netflix another way to lure new customers and also offer something none of its direct competitors currently provides', Bloomberg says. As well as gaming, Netflix is testing a new supplemental service called N-Plus, a recent survey sent to Netflix customers suggests.

Case on X-Press Pearl fire postponed to August
The case filed against five suspects, including the captain of the ‘X-Press Pearl’, regarding the fire which occurred on the said vessel was taken up in the Colombo High Court today (July 15). When the case was taken up, the Deputy Solicitor General had stated that court no orders are expected regarding the investigations today. Deputy Solicitor General Madhava Tennakoon who appeared on behalf of the Attorney General said that further investigations are being carried out into the incident. Accordingly, Colombo High Court Judge Damith Thotawatte postponed the case to August 6. The court also directed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to report on the progress of the relevant investigations on the next court day.

Coronavirus- 939 more infected patients recover
July 15, 2021 04:23 pmThe Ministry of Health reported that another 939 coronavirus patients have been discharged after completing recovery, within the last 24 hours. This pushes the total Covid-19 recoveries in the country thus far to 253,953. Sri Lanka has confirmed a total of 279,059 cases of Covid-19 while 22,471 of them are currently under medical care.

Over 30 Delta Covid patients found in Sri Lanka: DDGHS

Accordingly, 38 Delta Covid patients have been identified in the country so far, said Dr. Hemantha Herath. Trilateral Table Top Exercise 2021 conducted between India-Maldives-Sri Lanka
Virtual Trilateral Table Top Exercise (TTX) – 2021 was conducted from 14th to 15th July with participation of India-Maldives-Sri Lanka Navy, the High Commission of India said today. Rear Admiral Gurcharan Singh CSO (Ops), Western Naval Command, Indian Navy, Rear Admiral PS Mahawithana, Director General Operations, Sri Lanka Navy and Colonel Hilmy from Maldives National Defence Force were among the senior officers that participated in the inaugural session of TTX-2021 on 14 July. The exercise gains additional relevance in light of the successful Operation Sagar Aaraksha 2 executed in support of MV X Press Pearl. TTX-2021 exemplifies the deep trilateral engagement between India-Maldives-Sri Lanka which has strengthened immensely in maritime domain over the past years. The meeting was attended by India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, Sri Lanka’s Defence Secretary General (Retd) Kamal Gunaratne, and Maldives’ Defence Minister Mariya Didi.

Another 1.6 million Sinopharm doses from China

Tweeting through its official account, the Embassy stated that the stock of vaccines will arrive on the island in the coming weeks. The Embassy stated that this donation is to help further speed up the island’s vaccination drive to fight the pandemic.
