Face masks are no longer required by law, although official national guidance is to continue wearing them in crowded public places. Transport Uber recently became the latest transport company to announce that face coverings will remain mandatory on its services in England from today. A recent YouGov survey suggested 71% of people believe face coverings should continue to be mandatory on public transport after Monday. Today the NHS launched a new scheme to encourage people to continue wearing face coverings despite it no longer being law. Guidance published last night said: 'Government expects and recommends that people wear face coverings in crowded areas such as public transport.'

The warring teachers’ unions have not softened their stand despite the release of their leaders. One of the main arguments against the KDU Bill is that the defence university will be independent of the University Grants Commission (UGC). There is so much of resistance to the KDU Bill not because the defence university will not be under the UGC. The opponents of this view insist that the establishment of private universities will be at the expense of free education. Let them be urged to heed public health experts’ warnings and call a truce urgently.

According to the Ministry of Tourism, there are around 500,000 people directly and indirectly involved in the tourism industry, including hoteliers, staff, guides, drivers, and three-wheeler drivers. Preliminary research has shown that the Moderna vaccine has a high efficacy of 94% against Covid-19, while it is also effective against some new variants of the virus. Nearly 2,000 persons involved in the tourism sector in the Sigiriya area were vaccinated using the Moderna vaccine yesterday (18). He added that the Government is working towards restoring the wealth of small business owners that come under the tourism industry.
