‘No lockdown as Govt. can’t support daily earners’

Today, they can’t even provide a bed in a hospital for them,” SJB MP Thalatha Athukorala said yesterday (11). “At a time when there is a deadly pandemic in the country, what is the one thing that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has done according to the advice and the recommendations of the health experts? As a percentage of the population, Sri Lanka is among the countries that are leading the world in terms of Covid-19 deaths. Covid-19- daily count of new cases climbs to 2,890

This brings the total number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in the country thus far to 341,982. Over 36,000 infected patients are currently being treated for the virus while total recoveries has crossed the 300,000-mark in Sri Lanka. The death toll due to Covid-19 in island has climbed to 5,464.

Sri Lanka confirms another 124 Covid-19 deaths
August 11, 2021 08:08 pmThe Director General of Health Services has confirmed another 124 coronavirus related deaths for August 10, pushing the country official death toll due to the virus pandemic to 5,464. This is reportedly the highest daily count of Covid-19 deaths recorded in the country while this also marks the third consecutive day that the daily count of Covid-19 deaths has exceeded 100. Of the Covid-19 deaths confirmed today, 75 are males and 49 are females while one of the victims is below the age of 30. Twenty-eight are between the ages of 30-59 while the remaining 95 are aged 60 and above.

SL troops involved in peacekeeping efforts in Lebanon receive praise
Sri Lankan troops have earned much respect at the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) for their outstanding professionalism. According to a statement released by the Sri Lankan Embassy in Beirut, the Head of Mission and Force Commander of UNIFIL Major General Stefeno DEL COL, during a discussion with Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Lebanon Shani Calyaneratne Karunaratne, thanked the Sri Lanka troops for their outstanding contribution to UNIFIL for the past 10 years and stated that they were a great source of strength. The meeting took place during a visit undertaken by Ambassador Karunaratne to the Head Quarters of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) at Blue Line, in Naquara, on 09 August, 2021. In her address, Ambassador Karunaratne acknowledged the comment by the UNIFIL Head of Mission. She was also accorded a Guard of Honour followed by an inspection of the troops.

Investigation into loss of over 8,000 Covid patient records
Minister of Health Pavithra Wanniarachchi and the Director General of Health is currently in the process of investigating the loss of over 8,000 Covid-19 patient records. According to the Director of the Health Promotion Bureau of Sri Lanka, Dr. Ranjith Batuwanthudawa, though the Health Ministry reported 3,615 cases from Gampaha District within the last 9 days, other reports show that 12,750 patients have been detected within the same time frame. These statements were made during a media briefing held today (11). It was also noted that this discrepancy could be the number of PCR tests which were conducted in the area. Additionally, Dr. Batuwanthudawa also pointed out that more than 7,000 patients who should be treated in hospitals are still remaining in their place of residence.

HPBS admits to flaws in COVID-19 statistics
COLOMBO (News 1st): The Director of the Health Promotion Bureau of Sri Lanka, Dr. Ranjith Batuwanthudawa admits that there are flaws in the COVID-19 patient statistics. Dr. Batuwanthudawa stated this in response to a question about the COVID-19 statistics, during a press conference held on Wednesday (11). He said that although the Ministry of Health reported 3,615 from Gampaha District within the last 9 days, reports state that 12,750 patients have been reported from the District. Dr. Batuwanthudawa added that there is a suspicion whether the reported numbers denote the number of PCR samples obtained from the District. Trade Union Leader Saman Rathnapriya claimed that the data released on COVID-19 is flawed.

Two employees test Covid-19 positive at SLC HQ
Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has announced that the SLC Headquarters in Colombo has started to operate with a minimal number of employees, effective from today (11). The decision was taken, following the detection of two SLC employees as Covid Positive, and also considering the current health situation in the country, a statement said, adding that the rest of the employees will attend to regular work via virtual measures. In the meantime, at the High-Performance Center (HPC), player rehabilitation and fitness programs will operate, whilst no squad training programs will take place as the players are currently in Pallekele to take part in the Invitational T20 League. Indo-Lanka ties must be more strategic says Moragoda
Milinda Moragoda, Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to be in New Delhi has stated that the relationship between Sri Lanka and India should be one that is more strategic. In an Interview with The Hindu, Moragoda claimed that current Indo-Lanka ties are “asymmetric”, and the focus must be on elevating bilateral ties from the current “transactional” phase. In terms of post-war reconciliation, Moragoda expressed that it cannot be a political solution, and added that such reconciliation must be home grown. However, he noted that for now, the provincial council system is very much part of Sri Lanka’s Constitution. In terms of elections, Moragoda highlighted that they will be on hold until a new consensus on a electoral system is reached in Parliament.
