ICRA lowers 2021 GDP forecast
ICRA Lanka yesterday (2) downgraded its previous GDP growth forecast of 3.6% which was predicted prior to the release of 1Q21 GDP growth rate, to 3.4% assuming there will be no major shocks in 3Q21 and 4Q21. The adoption of organic fertiliser should be done in phases spread across an adequate time span to avoid disruption to agricultural output, ICRA Lanka added. However, in terms of exports, Sri Lanka’s key export destinations are expected to have a stronger second half this year. If Sri Lanka can meet its target for vaccination coverage, then there is a glimmer of hope that tourism may resume. ICRA Lanka expects the total import bill to reach $ 20.3 billion in 2021.

BOC sets up one-stop export unit Export Cycle
In line with its 82nd anniversary celebrations, Bank of Ceylon (BOC) yesterday (2) launched “Export Cycle” at the bank’s head office building, under the patronage of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa virtually from Temple Trees. The move was initiated by the Trade Finance Division of BOC with the aim of accommodating exporters from all walks of life. This one-stop export unit which is said to be built with state-of-the-art ambiance. BOC Chairman Kanchana Ratwatte said Bank of Ceylon has always rendered its fullest co-operation to the socioeconomic development of the country over the past 82 years. BOC has reached over 2,000 customer touch points across Sri Lanka and has established its branches in Chennai, Male, Hulhumale, and Seychelles.

Sapphire to go on auction in China in Nov.

The initially reported star cluster was discovered by accident in a backyard in Ratnapura, and in fact, it was reported six months following the uncovering. The other sapphire cluster is 80 kgs in weight while it was also discovered from Ratnapura. Expressing his thoughts on the star sapphire cluster, the National Gem and Jewellery Authority of Sri Lanka Chairman Thilak Weerasinghe said: “It is a special star sapphire specimen, probably the biggest in the world. Moreover, precious and semi-precious stones including rubies, sapphires, and cat’s-eyes, alexandrite, topaz, amethyst, aquamarine, tourmaline, garnet, and zircon have been found in Sri Lanka.

Petroleum Resources Bill to Parliament on 17 Aug.
The Petroleum Resources Bill is expected to be presented to Parliament on 17 August and to the Parliamentary Consultative Committee of the Ministry of Energy on 18 August. Thereafter, the Petroleum Resources Bill is due to be passed in Parliament in early September. Once approved, the Petroleum Resources Development Secretariat will become an authority, and the Petroleum Resources Advisory Council, as well as the National Oil and Gas Company, will be established. The objective of establishing the Petroleum Development Authority in Sri Lanka, formulating a National Policy on the Petroleum Industry, and maximising the value of local petroleum resources through modern exploration, development, production, and management practices. Accordingly, the Petroleum Resources Act will provide solutions to the above problems and attract and encourage investors to start the petroleum industry in Sri Lanka.

Rape cases to be concluded in 3 months?

Sarath Weerasekera said that fast-tracked trials are an important aspect in the country where most of the trials related to rape cases at present take years to conclude. According to the new procedures, we are hoping to conclude trials related to rape cases at least within three months,” Weerasekera added. “I’m satisfied if these trials would end at least by six months, but I encourage the time frame of three months,” he noted. According to him, most of the Middle Eastern and European countries process rape cases as fast track trials.

Daily COVID caseload moves to 2,382
August 2, 2021 10:02 pmThe Epidemiology Unit of the Health Ministry reports that another 702 persons have tested positive for COVID-19 in Sri Lanka, moving the daily total of new cases to 2,382. This brings the total number of confirmed cases of coronavirus reported in the country to 313,769. As many as 280,868 recoveries and 4,571 deaths have been confirmed in Sri Lanka since the outbreak of the pandemic. The Epidemiology Unit’s data showed that 28,393 active cases are currently under medical care.
