Inter-Province Travel Restrictions to Continue – Army Commander
COLOMBO (News 1st); Inter-Provincial travel restrictions will have to continue, though quarantine curfew is lifted on Friday (01), said Army Commander General Shavendra Silva. He said the Director-General of Health Services will issue the necessary guidelines that need to be followed when the Quarantine Curfew is lifted. “Sri Lanka has been successful in fully vaccinating approximately 54% of the total population,” said the Army Commander noting for a country as small as Sri Lanka, it should be considered as a victory. Further, the Army Commander appreciated the efforts taken by the public to limit their movements during the past two months and expects full public support in the future as well in order to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Adani Group signs agreement to develop West Container Terminal
COLOMBO (News 1st); India’s Adani Group signed a build-operate-transfer (BOT) agreement with its local partner John Keells Holdings PLC and the Sri Lanka Port Authority (SLPA) on Thursday (30 September), to develop the West Container Terminal (WCT) in Colombo. The signing event for the $700 million was held virtually, and 51% of shares of WCT will be vested with Adani Group. Colombo Port is particularly significant for India, as it handles roughly 40 percent of transshipped container cargo bound for the Indian market. Operations of the West Container Terminal will be carried out by a new joint company named the West Container International Terminal. 51% of WCT will be with Adani Group, 34% with John Keells and 15% with Sri Lanka Ports Authority.

Police initiate inquiry on CID officers who interrogated journalists
An inquiry has been initiated into the unprofessional and irresponsible behavior displayed by certain officers of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) by interrogating several media persons disregarding the instructions not to do so, the Police Headquarters says. Minister of Public Security Sarath Weerasekara yesterday (Sep. 29) called for an inquiry into the relevant incident. The relevant directives were given to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) C.D. Further, the minister has instructed the IGP to hand over the investigations into the garlic scam from the Peliyagoda Special Crimes Division to the CID and to conduct a comprehensive probe. Reportedly, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa had directed the CID not to question the journalists who reported the recent garlic scam, however, despite the instructions, the investigators had recorded statements from them.

The UNICEF office in Colombo marked World Children’s Day yesterday (29) by noting the importance of reopening schools in the country. Connectivity issues, the unavailability of parents to help children during the online session are some reasons that have hampered the children’s ability to learn,” UNICEF Representative Christian Skoog stated. He went on to say that children from poorer households are the most affected, due to the lack of resources. “Over 40% of households have access to a computer, whereas with one computer multiple children cannot be taught,” Skoog explained. In conclusion, Skoog stated that such difficulties faced by children affect their ability to interact and continue learning.

YouTube bans vaccine misinformation
YouTube pulled ads from anti-vaccination content in 2019, and said in October 2020 that it would remove videos that pushed misinformation around COVID-19 vaccines. The new policy expands to block misinformation around other vaccines, including the flu shot, the HPV vaccine, and the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine. Along with the new policy, YouTube is also terminating the channels of major anti-vaxxers, a YouTube spokesperson confirmed to The Verge. YouTube expanded its vaccine policies after noting that misinformation around all vaccines could contribute to mistrust around the COVID-19 vaccine, Matt Halprin, YouTube’s vice president of global trust and safety, told The Washington Post. Facebook similarly expanded its vaccine misinformation policy in February to block claims that the shots are dangerous.
