SBP governor reveals communication gap on debt restructuring

Pakistan’s GDP growth rate for the outgoing fiscal year 2023 was a mere 0.3%, significantly lower than the 6.1% achieved in FY22. The private sector, considered the engine of economic growth, needs access to affordable credit to stimulate economic expansion. While the SBP has raised the policy rate cumulatively by 7.25 percentage points during FY23, further significant rate cuts are necessary to fuel economic growth. The significant contraction in the industrial sector and the slower growth in the services sector have been major drags on economic growth.

Russia seeks expansion in ties with Pakistan
Russia has sought to expand and deepen cooperation with Pakistan as the first shipment carrying Russian oil reached Karachi Port at the weekend. In April, the two countries signed a landmark deal that allowed Pakistan to receive the first Russian oil shipment at the weekend. The first shipment is part of the pilot project to assess if Russian oil can be beneficial for Pakistan. However, he added, Russia had always been interested in expanding cooperation with Pakistan, and under no circumstances has abandoned its commitments. It is on these pillars that the statehood of modern Pakistan is based.”He said that Russia attached great importance to further constructive cooperation with Pakistan in international fora.

PM to approach ‘people if IMF deal delayed’
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Sunday he would approach the public in case the government was unable to seal the deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for the bailout package before its expiry on June 30. “If the IMF agreement is delayed, I will appeal to the people of Pakistan,” he added, without elaborating. Shehbaz blamed the previous government for current economic crisis, saying that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government violated the agreement with the IMF. Highlighting the initiatives announced in the federal budget, the prime minister said the poor man was caught in the inflation mill. The prime minister told the ceremony that the May 9 violence was no less than an attack by the enemy.

Renowned Indian actor Naseeruddin Shah has found himself embroiled in a heated controversy after making statements claiming that Sindhi is no longer spoken in Pakistan. Taking to his official Facebook page on Sunday, Shah once again issued an apology to the Sindhi-speaking population of Pakistan, acknowledging his mistake and expressing regret for any offence caused. PCB contacts four cricket boards to arrange ODI matches before World Cup
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has reached out to four cricket boards in order to schedule One Day International (ODI) matches for the Pakistan team before the 2023 World Cup, which will take place in India later this year. Sources have revealed that the PCB has initiated contact with Australia, New Zealand, Bangladesh, and South Africa, inviting them to visit Pakistan in August and participate in either bilateral or tri-nation series. The PCB's email to the aforementioned boards stated that these series would offer the visiting teams an opportunity to acclimatize to the conditions in the subcontinent ahead of the mega event. ACE conducts raids to arrest Imran’s sister
The Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) conducted raids to arrest Dr Uzma Khan, the sister of former prime minister Imran Khan, and her husband, Ahad Majeed, in a mega-corruption case, an ACE spokesperson said on Sunday. The spokesperson said that the ACE officials conducted raids at their houses in Lahore and Layyah, however, no arrest had been made so far. He added that the landowners had filed complaints against Uzma and others to the police for forcibly buying the land. Govt trying to re-negotiate with IMF on favorable terms: Dar

UNSC report underscores TTP’s persistent threat to Pakistan’s security
UNITED NATIONS - A United Nations Security Council report has come as a reminder about the persistent threat Pakistan’s security faces from the Afghanistan-based Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), saying the militant group also poses a threat to the region. “The link between the Taliban and both Al-Qaeda and Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) remains strong and symbiotic,” the annual report of the 1988 Taliban sanctions committee monitoring team noted. The report comes amid escalating TTP attacks inside Pakistani territory to which Pakistan has repeatedly drawn the attention of the international community. “It is too early to judge the impact of the decree by the Taliban in April 2022 banning poppy cultivation,” the report added. Key Taliban individuals remain closely involved in production and trafficking.” However, the Afghan Taliban dismissed the report and called it “full of prejudice”, according to media reports.

25 civilians court-martialled during PTI tenure
Fateh Khan, Fazal Ghaffar and Tajir Gul had been convicted of carrying our terror attacks in the country by military courts. “Trying civilians in military courts is lawful [in some cases] but 25 people faced military court trials when Imran Khan was the prime minister. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief, therefore, has no moral high ground to oppose military trials now,” Rahiem said on Sunday, while speaking to The Express Tribune. He said military courts gave death sentences to three of these people while others were sentenced to 10-year to 15-year imprisonment for violating the Official Secret Act, 1923. He said the decision to hold trials of civilians in military courts has already been challenged in the Supreme Court.

Mauritius defeat Pakistan in four-nation cup opener
LAHORE - Pakistan football team was beaten by Mauritius 3-0 in the opening match of the four-nation cup at the Anjalay Stadium Belle Vue Harel on Sunday. Ashley Nazira scored the second goal in the 63rd minute meanwhile Pakistan’s Mamoom Mosa scored an own goal in the 72nd minute of the game to extend Mauritius’s lead. The former England youth team Captain Easah Suliman and Denmark-based defender Abdullah Iqbal missed the first game against Mauritius. They will join the team on June 12 according to the head coach of Pakistan’s football team. Kenya and Djibouti are the other teams in the event being held on the basis of single-league basis.
