REUTERS/Jonathan Barrett/File PhotoThe groundwork for a major trial of gene-edited wheat has begun in Australia, where a state company is growing hundreds of varieties it says could be up to 10% more productive and make farming more sustainable. Some gene-edited crops are already available but most offer specific nutritional improvements or disease resistance rather than a range of changes aimed at higher productivity per unit of water or fertiliser. Regulators in countries including the US and Japan have decided gene-edited crops are akin to those derived from breeding, making their approval simpler. The European Union is moving in a similar direction, and China, the biggest wheat producer and consumer, this month approved a gene-edited disease-resistant wheat for planting. Genetically modified soybeans and corn have been widely adopted in recent decades but consumers and regulators have been less willing to sanction GMO wheat because unlike soybeans and corn, which are mainly fed to animals, wheat is a staple food for humans.

The first round of ‘conversation’ between Pakistan and the IMF over the former’s desire for a larger and lengthier programme appears to have ended, albeit some bumps remain visible. The IMF recently warned that heightened political uncertainty and the rise of social tensions could jeopardise economic stability. “The return of the outgoing government to office following the elections signals a sustained commitment to the reform agenda agreed upon during the SBA. This not only increases the chance of reform continuation, but also ensures political stability over the next five years. According to the just finished interaction with the IMF mission, the next phase of economic stabilisation would be extremely difficult for the majority of the population.

This surge in costs has not only caused economic worries but also emphasized the vital role of individuals in regulating market pricing. Though the government must oversee market pricing, there is an urgent need for collaboration from the corporate sector. Unfortunately, business syndicates have spread rapidly in other areas, gaining influence over market pricing gradually. Consequently, citizens need to play a pivotal role in the control of market prices. Likewise, it is essential to promote cooperation among people, government agencies, and NGOs to ensure strong control of market prices.

I would like to draw the government’s attention to the issue of strikes. Due to strikes in the cities, there are significant losses. Educational institutions and bazaars remain completely closed, causing financial losses for businessmen and disrupting education. In Balochistan, strict laws are known to address this issue, but it remains a challenge for the public to fulfill their needs during strikes. I urgently implore the concerned authorities to address this matter adequately.

The future of Pakistan's sugarcane farmers and the attached industry can be made brighter by resolving the issues being faced by the growers. He said that every year sugar mills exploit the farmers but no stern action was taken against them. Asif Ali, an agent, told WealthPK that a major challenge facing the sugarcane farmers was unfair pricing by the mills. He said the dominance of sugar mills had led to an unfair market environment, putting financial strain on the farmers. Instead of devising strategies for large corporations, he urged the government to focus on the small farmers' issues.

The federal government on Thursday barred TV channels and newspapers from broadcasting or publishing contemptuous content against the judiciary following orders from the Supreme Court. The order also restrained the media from airing and publishing material constituting contempt of court and warned that non-compliance might result in legal action. The court’s written order noted that on May 15, 2024, Senator Vawda held a press conference at the National Press Club, Islamabad, which was broadcast live on several television channels. In the press conference, he apparently made several malicious and serious allegations against the judiciary, commented on judges of the superior courts, and spoke about sub judice cases, including those before this court, said the order. The press conference was also streamed on the internet and social media platforms, and excerpts from his talk were published in various newspapers.

Greenhouse gases include water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, ozone, etc. This is mainly because green plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. According to a survey conducted, many cities are unfit for living due to the release of five toxic gases. The affected poor countries are waiting for compensation from the rich countries responsible for causing this global warming. Because nature is making a small contribution to climate change, we must adjust to this climate by controlling human and nature-induced warming as much as possible.

On average, SNGPL customers should spend Rs179.17 per mmBtu less in the coming fiscal year, while SSGC customers should save Rs59.23 per mmBtu. However, that will not happen for SNGPL consumers because the government plans to collect the Rs581 billion rate disparity that was not passed on to them over the last six years. The government may not recoup the entire amount from inflation-stricken petrol consumers in a single year, but rather over a number of years. Authorities have previously announced plans to boost gas and electricity costs beginning with the new fiscal year. Energy inflation has been a major driver of the rising cost of living in recent years.
