Despite exporting more rice this year at higher prices compared to last year, both Basmati and non-Basmati rice prices have surprisingly fallen in the domestic market. Pakistani Basmati rice growers are swiftly transitioning to high-yield hybrid coarse rice varieties due to several factors: the lower yield of original Basmati, high costs, and losses incurred when harvesting and bringing Basmati paddy to market. There is a growing concern regarding India selling more than 4 million tonnes of Pusa rice varieties, labelled as Basmati rice, to innocent new generation consumers living abroad. These benefits should be passed on to the growers of original Basmati rice in Kalar tract to protect Basmati heritage. Agriculture is the backbone of Pakistan’s economy, and smuggling may jeopardise Pakistan’s traditional Basmati rice varieties, which constitute a billion-dollar trade.

The Indian election contest that is now underway appears to be quite similar to the one that took place in 2019. Approximately 200 million Muslims live in India, despite the fact that the majority of its citizens identify as Hindus. The approximately 200 million Muslims in India have experienced tremendous upheaval since the Hindu nationalist (BJP) led by Narendra Modi came to power in 2014. Muslims (204 million), Christians (28 million), Sikhs (21 million), and Buddhists (8.5 million) make up sizable portions of the population. The anti-Pakistan rhetoric in Modi’s speeches highlights his affiliation with the fascist philosophy of the RSS, which raises grave concerns about India’s self-acclaimed “Maha Barat”.

THE prime minister concluded a one-day visit to the United Arab Emirates on Thursday, marking the conclusion of the administration’s relentless push to attract Gulf investment to Pakistan. Mr. Sharif has indicated that the UAE may cooperate in the areas of IT, renewable energy, and tourism. Although the promises made by our Gulf friends are comforting, the multibillion dollar question is when they will actually come to pass. It’s possible that the Saudis and Emiratis are holding off on releasing their own money until the IMF approves the next loan to Pakistan. We need to continue seeking foreign investment and provide an environment free from bureaucratic roadblocks that is conducive to business.
