Nigeria finally deposited its instrument of acceptance for the Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies yesterday, making it the second African World Trade Organisation (WTO) member to do so. Acceptances from two-thirds of WTO members are needed for the Agreement to come into effect. Reacting to this, Okonjo-Iweala said: “I am profoundly grateful to Nigeria for formally accepting the WTO Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies. He added that the Agreement would put a stop to all harmful fisheries subsidies, such as illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing activities by all WTO members. The Agreement prohibits support for IUU fishing, bans support for fishing overfished stocks, and ends subsidies for fishing on unregulated high seas.

Three people have been confirmed dead, with 25 others injured in Russia’s attack on Kryvyi Rih by the regional governor. Ukrainian officials said the central city of Kryvyi Rih, President Zelensky’s hometown, suffered what was described as a ‘massive missile attack’ overnight. Governor of the Dnipropetrovsk region where Kryvyi Rih is located, Serhiy Lisak, shared a picture on Telegram which he said showed the damage done by Russia’s overnight attack on the city. “There are killed and wounded,” he wrote, urging people not to ignore air raid alerts as the situation was still “dangerous”. Lisak said a five-storey building is still engulfed by flames and that there are probably more people trapped under the rubble.

People of Ita-Akun, Ikire, in the Irewole local government area of Osun State, have accused some top government officials of engaging in the sale of chieftaincy and obaship positions to the highest bidders, without following the proper selection process for such prestigious traditional titles. The leaders called upon the state governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, to address the matter before it escalates further. The spokesperson for the community brought to the governor’s attention the appointment and installation of Morufu Adesoji Fabowale as the Sooko of Ita-Akun, raising objections to the process followed. The spokesperson highlighted that Fabowale hails from the Molaja house, which is not recognized as a ruling house for the purpose of chieftaincy. The community spokesperson pleaded with Governor Ademola Adeleke to reverse the appointment and installation of Morufu Fabowale as the Sooko of Ita-Akun in order to prevent a crisis within the community.

The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria has advised the newly inducted medical doctors of the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo against running away from the country to practice abroad. The council also told the doctors that medical practice was a service to humanity, hence the need for them to think of how to contribute to the Nigerian medical system. The Registrar of the council, Dr Tajudeen Sanusi, said this at the maiden induction ceremony of the UNIMED. A total of 34 medical graduates of the institution were inducted into the medical profession by the council. At least 10 people have died and 15 others are in hospital after a wedding bus crashed in an Australian wine region north of Sydney, officials say. NATO will begin the largest air force deployment exercise in Europe in the alliance’s history on Monday in a display of unity toward partners and potential threats such as Russia. The German-led “Air Defender 23” will run until June 23 and include some 250 military aircraft from 25 NATO and partner countries including Japan and Sweden, which is bidding to join the alliance. – ‘Great power competition’ –The exercise will include operational and tactical-level training, primarily in Germany, but also in the Czech Republic, Estonia and Latvia. Niger State government has advised residents across the 25 Local government areas of the state, particularly those who are living in the riverine communities, to be watchful and steer clear of floods during this year’s rainy season. The State Deputy Governor, Comrade Garba Yakubu, gave the advice over the weekend while speaking through the Acting Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency(NEMA), Malam Garba Salihu while holding a meeting with the Desks Officers of the Agency at its Corporate office in Ebitu Ukiwe Road, GRA Minna on the need for everyone in the state to be at alert and be adequately prepared in good time and conscious against the 2023 raining season. He explained the need to invite the 25 Desks officers across the 25 local government areas of the state under NEMA arose following the letter of flood warnings from NISER and NIMET about the impending flood of this rainy season in the year 2023. Adding that Niger state has been identified as one of the states to experience flood disaster this year. Garba Salihu identified some local governments in the state that are flood prone, which include Mokwa, Lavun, Lapai, Shiroro, Wushishi, and others that are located in communities in the flood plains through trans- national Rivers like River Niger and River Kaduna.

Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, has approved the immediate recruitment of 195 health personnel for the thirteenth General Hospitals in the State. The health personnel includes Doctors, Nurses, Laboratory Scientists, Pharmacists and Health Attendance.
