Heavy downpour which started from the early hours of Friday morning in Abuja has once again left the popular trademore estate submerged in flood, with property worth hundreds of millions naira damaged in the process. YLA 681 FS was drowned in the flood and is still missing at Imo Street of the Estate while 4 other persons were rescued and in stable condition. Residents of the estate were seen during the downpour, trying to save their lives and salvage their properties after their houses were submerged by the flood. Trademore estate has over the years suffered from series of devastating effect of flooding with lives and properties worth billions of naira lost. Thanks to a re-engineering remediation strategy employed by the estate owner which ensured expansion of gutters and demolition of building standing along flood plains.

A High Court in the Federal Capital Territory, on Thursday, sentenced a suspect, Okwo Mark, to three months in prison for impersonating an American citizen, Stella Coleman, working as an FBI agent. Mark pleaded guilty to the charge and begged the court for leniency. The judge also ordered Mark to clean the EFCC office from 8am till noon under the supervision of an official of the legal department. The EFCC counsel, M.M.Gwani, told the court that Mark, sometime in 2022, within the jurisdiction of the court, cheated. Gwani said the convict deceived while pretending to be an American citizen, Stella Coleman, working as an FBI agent.

More than 2,750 civilians have been killed in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo since the start of the year, international aid agencies warned Thursday, calling for urgent humanitarian action. “In many areas, the presence of active non-state armed groups is aggravating the ongoing cycle of violence, triggering massive population displacements and exacerbating an already fragile humanitarian situation,” the Forum of International NGOs in the Democratic Republic of Congo said. The forum is made up of at least 124 international non-governmental organisations operating in the DRC, the statement said. On Monday, the UN’s humanitarian coordination office OCHA warned of “rampant violence and rising humanitarian needs” in eastern DRC. In its statement, the forum of international NGOs also noted a rapid and alarming deterioration in the humanitarian situation in the east of the country.

The management of the Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa, Ondo State has declared that the sacking of some staff of the university did not have any political or religious undertone. The statement read, ” The management wishes to assure staff, students, and the general public that the current disengagement of staff by the governing council of the university is being addressed. “Management also wishes to inform the general public that the disengagement has no ethnic, political or religious colouration. The workers of the university on Wednesday staged a protest, against the alleged dismissal of affected staff. They vowed to continue to paralyze all academic and non-academic activities on the campus until the management reverse the decision.

Five crew members onboard the submersible Titan were likely killed instantaneously in a “catastrophic implosion” when it dived into the Titanic disaster two miles beneath the surface of the Atlantic Ocean. The Jigawa State Command of the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has successfully confiscated 999.30 kilograms of narcotic drugs in the state. The NDLEA commander stated that the command has arrested 422 drug dealers and users from June last year to date in different operations across the state. He said, “Out of the 422 suspects arrested, 409 were male and 13 were female. Out of which 186 were counselled and 94 were convicted.”“A total of 15 individuals were rehabilitated. Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa (Rtd), for his zero tolerance to drug abuse and illicit trafficking in the country,” emphasized Dan-Musa.

Uber and Bolt drivers under the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transport Workers of Nigeria, on Wednesday, suspended their scheduled indefinite strike. According to the Chairman, Media and Publicity Committee of AUATWON, Jossy Olawale, in a statement said the suspension was to permit discussion with the government. He said the meeting fixed with the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Uber, Bolt and the union would hold on June 26, 2023. The PUNCH reports that ride-hailing drivers went on a nationwide strike on June 7, 2023, to demand an increase in their fares by 200 per cent from the ride-hailing companies. Olawale said, “The union and some app companies had earlier scheduled a meeting with the ministry for June 20 but got a letter that the meeting has been rescheduled for Monday, June 26.

Apparently satisfied with the policies being implemented by his administration in the last few weeks, world leaders are eager to meet with President Bola Tinubu to explore areas of cooperation. As of Wednesday, at least four foreign leaders have requested to meet with the president in Paris, France where he will on Thursday participate in the New Global Financial Pact Summit organized by President Emmanuel Macron. He said the summit will enable President Tinubu on his first foreign trip since his inauguration to network in his bid to attract foreign investment to the country. “However, with all of these, you still need a direct foreign injection of foreign exchange to build or complement the domestic policies. As the three-day ceasefire between the Sudanese Army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) expired, the RSF set fire to the intelligence building next door to Army Headquarters. According to media reports, the renewed violence in Khartoum comes as the aid organisation, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) reported severe violence against civilians in the West Darfur region. There have been repeated attacks in Sudan, a country of about 46 million, even during the ceasefire. The RSF of former deputy Mohammed Hamdan Daglo is a quasi-army formed from militias with tens of thousands of fighters. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), almost 25 million need help, including at least four million children.

Rice farmers in Argungu have decried the invasion of their farms by quela birds which have destroyed about 75,000 hectares of farm crops in the area. One of the farmers, who spoke to journalists in Birnin-Kebbi, the state capital, on Tuesday, Mama Garba Rabe, expressed concern over the situation, saying that apart from high cost of fuel and fertiliser, the quela birds are also causing problems for them. He said he spent over 20 years cultivating rice but has never seen birds like the quela birds before. “By the time they landed on a rice field within few seconds, they will finish it,” he said. The chairman of Argungu Local Government Area, Alhaji Salihu Argungu, also told newsmen that they are making effort to wipe out the birds through the use of chemicals.

The senator representing Delta Central Senatorial District of Delta State, Chief Ede Dafinone, on Monday, paid an unscheduled visit to Sapele Technical College, the second oldest technical college in Nigeria, lamenting the present state of dilapidation of the institution. He, however, promised to work with the government at all levels to reposition the once-famous college. Sapele Technical College, aside from being the second oldest technical college after Yaba Technical College, is the first technical school in Delta, and it is owned by the state government. The PUNCH gathered that Sapele Technical College, which has been without power for the past two years, also has its workshops for practicals in complete disrepair. The Principal also said that the College has been the target of vandalism as thieves have broken into the workshops and stolen tools and equipment.
