THE Muslim call to prayer will ring out more freely in New York City under guidelines announced on Tuesday by Mayor Eric Adams, which he said should foster a spirit of inclusivity. Houses of worship can broadcast up to 10 decibels over the ambient sound level, the mayor’s office said. “For too long, there has been a feeling that our communities were not allowed to amplify their calls to prayer,” Adams said. Officials in Minneapolis made news last year when they moved to allow mosques to broadcast the adhan publicly. “Having that echo in a New York City neighbourhood will make them feel part of a community that acknowledges them,” she added.

The Niger junta has ordered the police to forcefully evict French ambassador, Ambassador Sylvain Itte, from the country. The visas of French ambassador and his family have been cancelled and police are instructed to expel the envoy, the junta said in a statement dated Aug. 29 and confirmed as authentic on Thursday by its communications head, according to Reuters. The regional bloc, ECOWAS deployed a “standby” force and ordered it to transition Niger back to constitutional rule. The force has not yet entered Niger, and the bloc says the door remains open to dialogue but it won’t wait forever. The junta has appointed a new government and said it would return Niger to the system of government prescribed by the constitution within three years, a timeline that ECOWAS has rejected.

THREE months into his Presidential term, the serial disregard for the rule of law and disobedience of court orders inherited from his predecessor has continued unabated under Bola Tinubu. Unless he moves quickly to rein in the officials and agencies trampling on the law, Tinubu’s fraying democratic credentials will be tarnished beyond repair. Exasperated by the defiance of state authorities, Oweibo expressed frustration at the government’s penchant of rendering court orders ineffectual through disobedience. Disobedience of court orders however undermines democracy and the rule of law. He and the new Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, have a sacred responsibility to restore the rule of law, ensure respect for court orders and deepen democracy in Nigeria.
