The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has fined British American Tobacco (Nigeria) Limited (BATN), British American Tobacco Marketing (Nigeria) Limited (BATMN), British American Tobacco Plc, and British American Tobacco Holdings Limited (all together referred to as BAT Parties) a sum of $110 million for infringement of the national tobacco control law. The statement further explained that “the Commission, on August 28, 2020, opened an active investigation with respect to British American Tobacco Nigeria Limited and other affiliated companies (BAT Parties). “Upon satisfying the Federal High Court that there was probable cause and sufficient evidence to exercise advanced statutory regulatory and investigatory tools, the court issued an order and warrant of search and seizure. “Additional investigation, including proffers, hearings, transcripts of sworn testimonies, and continuing analysis of evidence, established and supported multiple violations of the FCCPA and other enactments. “During the investigation and in furtherance of mutual engagements between the Commission and BAT Parties, BAT Parties in writing sought, and the Commission accepted BAT Parties into cooperation under the Commission’s Cooperation/Assistance Rules & Procedure, 2021 (CARP).

In a somber development, former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ghali Na’Abba, has passed away at the age of 65 in Abuja. The sad news was confirmed by Ahmed Lawal, an aide to the late speaker, in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Kano. The former speaker breathed his last in the early hours of Wednesday at the National Hospital, Abuja. Ghali Na’Abba had previously emerged as the Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate in the April 1999 National Assembly election in Kano Municipal Federal Constituency of Kano state. Left behind is his wife, 10 children, and three grandchildren.

Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, has condoled with the government and people of Plateau State on the recent killings in the state, stating that humanitarian support will be provided for the survivors. Danish container shipping major Maersk is preparing to resume vessel transits through the Red Sea following the deployment of naval assets in the region under the multinational security initiative Operation Prosperity Guardian (OPG). The United States launched the new multinational security operation under the umbrella of the Combined Maritime Forces and the leadership of Task Force 153, which focuses on security in the Red Sea. In addition to the United States; United Kingdom, Bahrain, Canada, France, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Seychelles, and Spain have also signed onto the initiative. Maersk joined numerous carriers in suspending vessel transits in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden following the escalation of the security situation in the region and the growing number of attacks by Yemen’s Houthi Group. No fewer than 25 persons have lost their lives following an explosion from an illegal oil tapping point in Omoku, Ogba/Egebema/Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State. Speaking, the chairman of Niger Delta Youth Movement, ONELGA chapter, Emeka Ukwuosah, advised youths in the area to engage in meaningful activities and shun illegal oil bunkering. Ukwuosah said, “Let me join in condemning the illegal oil bunkering going on within ONELGA. Agbabere said the vigilante group, the Community Development Committee and the youths were directed by a monarch in the area to put a stop to illegal oil bunkering activities there. The DR Congo government said Tuesday that it would outlaw an opposition-led demonstration planned for Wednesday to protest alleged “irregularities” in last week’s elections. Five opposition presidential candidates informed the governor of Kinshasa in a letter published Saturday of their intention to organise the march. But with definitive results still not announced, the government said the protests will be disruptive. “We will protest against the irregularities observed during voting,” they wrote. Another candidate and former governor of the south-east Katanga region, Moise Katumbi, called for the elections to be annulled.
