New Zealand's Joe (Biden/Ward) Moment
In large part as a result of that promise, Ward's party – United, hitherto in third place – was able to form the next government. (Ballance had been both Prime Minister and Treasurer during 1891 and 1892.) Ward became Prime Minister – and, in what was becoming a tradition, also Finance Minister – in 1906 following Richard Seddon's death. Then, thanks in part to Joe Ward's 'Joe Biden moment', United 'won' the election; it gained more seats than any other party, once four 'independent Liberals' were included in the count. Ward died early in 1930, with his earnest and conservative Deputy – George Forbes – taking over as both Prime Minister and Minister of Finance.

As Newshub leaves Kiwi screens forever tonight, Ant Farac, the creative force behind the original brand, looks back at his inspiration. Farac, now with strategic consultancy These Guys I Know, recalls the inspiration for the original Newshub brand: the New York subway system and its streamlined approach that made sense of commuter chaos. The subway design brought simplicity and structure – as great design should. “It makes sense from an immediate brand architecture perspective obviously (Three, Three Now, ThreeNews) but it certainly wasn’t what the original design intended or where we expected to end up, so it’s quite surreal. Farac’s creative work has secured These Guys I Know a finalist position in three categories at the NZ Marketing Awards creating the Star RV brand for Jucy Group.

Crooked Finger’s ‘Unshackled’ album

Listen to a band from the 1950s and you are essentially hearing a live performance in the studio. Robbie Laven did it on the recent Whittakers’ album and guitarist Bruce Rolands, featured on Gary Harvey’s new album, is particularly good at layering interlocking parts without losing feel. Indie-pop outfit Crooked Finger has achieved that at Mount Maunganui’s Studio 11b with debut album ‘Unshackled Vol 1’, out now on digital platforms and CD. Crooked Finger’s album launch will be at The Jam Factory next Saturday, July 12.

She joined Duncan Greive on The Fold this morning for a candid conversation alongside her outgoing co-host Mike McRoberts. If you want to tell stories, come to Three.”Looking back…Newshub’s eventual closure, wrote Duncan Greive in February, followed some clear signposts. If Stuff’s gamble pays off, my hope is we’ll one day see another breakfast programme on Three. Duncan Greive asked and tried to answer 14 questions about the new-look show when it was first announced.

ASB changes OCR call, predicts rate cut in November
Previously, ASB had been expecting the OCR to be held at 5.5% until February next year. Tuffley said households were starting to buckle under higher interest rates and inflation indicators were softening quickly. ASB put its OCR call under review immediately after the survey was released and ANZ, which still expects a February cut, said the case for a November cut was building. RBNZ will release full monetary policy statements in August and November, before going on a three month hiatus until February. Tuffley said monetary policy had been “leaning hard against inflation for over two and a half years now” but inflation had consistently been stronger than expected.

Deadly house fire: Neighbours tried 'valiantly' to save mother and son

A man who also lived at the rental property was away at work at the time the fire took hold, police said. Detective Sergeant Mark McCloy, of Invercargill, said officers were speaking to neighbours who tried to rescue the woman and her son. "Neighbours at the property attempted valiantly to gain entry to the burning house, but they were unable to and contacted emergency services," he said. IRD chasing cryptocurrency tax dodgers
The warning comes as the IRD intends to scrutinise people who actively deal in crypto assets, but aren't declaring income from this in their tax returns. That crypto values have reached new highs means people are well positioned to pay their tax for the 2024 and earlier year, IRD said. Even keeping transactions outside the country is unlikely to hide them from the IRD. The tax department said it receives data from crypto exchanges in New Zealand and overseas, and has signed up to the OECD crypto asset reporting framework. "That means New Zealand works closely with other tax jurisdictions and will get more data on customers' crypto asset transactions outside New Zealand," the department spokesperson said.

Weakness in ISM Services and Manufactured Goods Hits GDPNow Forecast
The GDPNow forecast took another dip today with the key item, Real Final Sales, now at 0.9 percent. The difference between the two line is Change In Private Inventories (CIPI) which nets to zero over time. The GDPNow model estimate for real GDP growth (seasonally adjusted annual rate) in the second quarter of 2024 is 1.5 percent on July 3, down from 1.7 percent on July 1. But I was very confident the model did not expect the dismal ISM Report or the dismal manufacturing data.
