At a council meeting later that month, Ms Barker apologised for being unaware of a scheduled and later cancelled subcommittee meeting and the hundreds of applications it was to consider. Ms Barker agreed it was "not a great situation" and the stopgap would address about 300 grant applications waiting to be assessed. In reply, Cr Garey acknowledged the measures were temporary, but said decisions to date had repercussions. "It has already undermined trust with the arts community."

While our community safety may not be threatened, the financial reverberations have quickly reached our shores, with the fuel price at the pump being a daily scorecard of the impact on personal finances. Presciently, New Zealand First has long been a champion for national fuel security. My colleague Shane Jones is the Minister in charge of developing a National Fuel Security Plan, an outcome of our coalition agreement with National. A Dunedin-born man died by suicide after being bullied in jail — an issue which was mismanaged by Corrections — a coroner says. Coroner Allie Cunninghame recommended bullying be "proactively" managed in prisons and said greater training for custodial staff needed to occur. Tragically, in 2016, his father, Russell Braddock, died in an avalanche in France, which led to an exacerbation of Nicholls-Braddock’s alcohol issues. Four days before his death, officers found a tattooing needle, ink and tobacco in Nicholls-Braddock’s cell, which resulted in a misconduct charge. In desperate phone calls to family, Nicholls-Braddock suggested the items were not his and said he had been repeatedly assaulted.

Rimoni Muliaga, 44, admitted he killed his wife Lise in Melbourne's west but claimed he was not guilty of murder because of his diagnosed intellectual disability and depressive disorder. In sentencing Muliaga on Wednesday, Justice James Gorton described the killing as a serious case of murder driven by unjustified and unwarranted jealousy. The presence of the children at the murder was an aggravating feature, Justice Gorton said. Justice Gorton said Muliaga's moral culpability was therefore reduced and the mental health conditions would make his time in custody more difficult. Justice Gorton said despite those factors, he still had to denounce the serious case of domestic violence and deter Muliaga from committing another attack again.

Police, fire crews and Wellington Free Ambulance were called to the crash in MÄkara just after 8am. Fire and Emergency New Zealand (Fenz) shift manager Alex Norris said crews arrived to find a car partially submerged in the stream on MÄkara Beach Rd - a narrow, winding road between Karori and MÄkara Beach. Our neighbour told me it's quite a common place where people go off - there's about a two- to three-metre drop from the road down to the stream.
