For equity investors seeking a smooth ride in 2026, increasing exposure beyond artificial intelligence (AI) euphoria could be a good New Year’s resolution – and opportunities may be hiding in plain sight. Investors have reason to be wary. US equity valuations currently look stretched, with the Shiller price-earnings ratio for the S&P 500 above 40 – very close to levels seen during the 1990s dot-com bubble.

PUTRAJAYA: It was a marathon affair at the High Court for the decision in Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) graft trial. Justice Collin Lawrence Sequerah himself took five hours to read his judgment and finished at 5pm after several breaks, including for Friday prayers. Justice Sequerah also found an “unequivocal nexus” between the former prime minister and fugitive financier Low Taek Jho (Jho Low). After Justice Sequerah, who is currently a Federal Court judge, finally finished reading his judgment, the court allowed a 30-minute break before mitigation began. After a brief back-and-forth, Justice Sequerah said there had been a misunderstanding, explaining that he initially thought the defence was seeking a new date for mitigation.

N'DJAMENA, Dec 26 (Reuters) - A drone attack killed two Chadian soldiers at a military camp near the Sudan border before dawn on Friday, local authorities and a security source said, adding it was not immediately clear who was behind the strike. Two people were killed and one seriously injured in the attack on the border town of Tine, said Hamit Hassan, prefect of the department that includes Tine. A Chadian military intelligence officer told Reuters the drone came from Sudan but it was unclear whether it was launched by the country’s army or paramilitary Rapid Support Force. If it is a Sudanese military drone, we will exercise our right to retaliate," the officer, who asked not to be named because he wasn't authorized to speak on the record, told Reuters. More than 12 million people have already been displaced by the ongoing war in Sudan, according to the International Rescue Committee (IRC).

While the S&P 500 wavered, it headed toward its best week in a month. The technical backdrop is supportive, raising the possibility the S&P 500 could avoid another year of negative Santa Claus Rally returns, said Adam Turnquist at LPL Financial. A positive outcome has seen the S&P 500 deliver an average January gain of 1.4% and a 10.4% surge for the full year that follows, said Turnquist. The S&P 500 held near 6,935. “It is obviously not fool proof, since it gave false readings in the past two years.”Of course, past performance is never a guarantee of future results, he warned.

KUALA LUMPUR: A new Perlis state government can still be formed without a state election if PAS and Bersatu can come to an agreement and resolve the current political turmoil, say analysts. "Even though there are several other options, including appointing a new Menteri Besar or forming a mixed government, political manoeuvering would cause complications. "When they’re declared vacant, you need to hold by-elections. But this clearly shows there is a problem in PAS that caused three assemblymen to reject the Menteri Besar,” he said. PN won 14 state seats in Perlis, nine by PAS and five by Bersatu, during the 15th general elections, while the Indera Kayangan seat was won by Pakatan Harapan.- Bernama
