The much anticipated news of the naming of the running mate of the Unity Party (UP) political leader, Joseph N. Boakai for the upcoming October 10, 2023 general and presidential elections finally became a reality when Nimba County Senator Jeremiah K. Koung was named as his running mate. He said the pick of the Nimba County Senator is intended to unite the younger generation, which continued to be marginalized by a government that cares about itself and not the emerging generation. JNB thanked Montserrado County Senator Abraham Darius Dillion for being the ‘lone voice’ of the opposition at the Legislature in flying the opposition flag. In December 2021, the United States Department of Treasury sanctioned Nimba County Senator Prince Y. Johnson for what they term his involvement in corruption activities in Liberia. Observers view Costa’s comments as another show of displeasure to see a Koung pick over the rest of them that ‘ cook the food, yet cannot eat it’.

By Associated PressA Dutch court on Friday banned a man from donating any more of his sperm after he fathered at least 550 children in the Netherlands and other countries and misled prospective parents about the number of offspring he helped to conceive. A judge at The Hague District Court ordered the halt in an injunction brought by the mother of a child conceived with the donor’s sperm and a foundation representing other parents. Tiawan Gongloe has described as scandalous the appropriation of hefty salaries by Liberian Legislature while the people they represent live in abject poverty. Gongloe said it is shameful that the annual salaries of the heads of the Liberian Legislature – the Speaker and President Pro Tempore are by far higher than their United States counterparts. The Liberian dollars they are dumping is not being paired with any US dollars, because we are an exporting country. There will be so much Liberian dollars on the market chasing the US dollars, which mean the exchange rate will be high. Because people want Liberian dollars to import good and they might increase the price.

Speaker Bhofal Chambers has warned against voters trucking during the ongoing biometric voter registration exercise across the country. The speaker added that voter trucking undermines development, which is driven by population. “Politicians who are in the habit of trucking voters are only doing that to get power; they are not in the interest of the people,” he said. The undemocratic practice of said voter trucking, he noted, only imposes leaders who aren’t the choice of the residents of the county they have been trucked to. It can be recalled that during the 2017 general and presidential elections, Speaker Chambers won with 7,858 votes, which constituted 57.3%.
