Sandy, the Red Setter who brought so much joy. Mammy was getting the basics of daily living sorted before she started on the trimmings of the Christmas dinner. It would join the goose in the oven for the Christmas dinner the next day. I didn’t know it then but it heralded a lifelong love of dogs and an association with that most beautiful of hunting breeds the Red Setter. A magical time and a magical feeling.

Of the many reasons why joining the Defence Forces is a good idea, this has to be one. “Extremely challenging” are the words that Tánaiste Micheál Martin used back in October, to describe the task of meeting Defence Forces recruitment targets by 2028. In August 2023, Permanent Defence Forces here numbered 7,671 - comprising 6,221 Army, 755 Navy and 695 Air Corps. The 7671 falls short of the current establishment of the Permanent Defence Forces at close to 9,600 and of plans to increase that number to 11,500 — to include civilian staff — by 2028. The Irish Defence Forces recruit Naval Service, Army and Air Corps recruits all year round.

New fund will ensure we do not make Metro stop-start mistake again – Eamon RyanBy Gráinne Ní Aodha, PAA new fund set up by the Government this year is hoped to ensure the same “stop-start” mistake made with the metro rail project for the Dublin area will not happen again, a minister has said. Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan said the priority next year will be to invest in public transport, walking and cycling routes because “gridlock would cost us a fortune if we just went down the road space policy”. I expect to be able to use some of that infrastructure fund if we need to, if we can’t afford it. “When we get to projects, because it’s a very long process we have, we need to make sure we don’t stop-start. “And I expect the infrastructure fund being one of the ways, if economic conditions don’t allow us to provide from the capital budget, to make sure we do build it, spend it.

“Provisionally this Christmas we have recorded the highest daily minimum temperature for Christmas Day on record, with both Exeter Airport and East Malling not falling below 12.4C”. The new record has further shattered dreams of a White Christmas for most of the UK, with warmer temperatures continuing after the country saw its warmest Christmas Eve for more than 20 years. 12.4C minimum at Exeter Airport & East Malling in Kent makes it the warmest overnight Christmas Day minimum on record. It comes after temperatures in Heathrow, south-west London and Cippenham, Berkshire hit 15.3C on Sunday, making it the warmest Christmas Eve since 1997. The warmest December 25 on record was 15.6C in 1920, while the highest Christmas Eve temperatures of 15.5C were set in Aberdeen and Banff in Scotland in 1931.

Ireland will not boycott the Eurovision Song Contest even if Israel takes part, the Taoiseach has said. RTÉ has received hundreds of emails urging a boycott in a stance against the conflict involving Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Mr Varadkar also pointed to previous winner of the competition, trans woman Dana International, who represented Israel and said many people in Israel have “Western liberal outlook”. So I don't think a unilateral boycott by Ireland of any sporting event or any musical event or competition is the right way to go." The Taoiseach said “a lot of people” in Israel are liberals who don’t support their government.
