Talks between Boeing and the union representing 33,000 striking machinists have broken down with the two sides blaming each other for refusing to compromise, leaving little hope that the walkout now entering its fourth week will be resolved anytime soon. It was their third meeting since machinists voted overwhelmingly last month to reject Boeing initial offer of a 25 percent wage increase over four years. The last strike by machinists in 2008 lasted 54 days. AdvertisementThe stalemate between Boeing and its largest employee union comes as the company is facing multiple legal, safety and financial crises. Analysts estimate that the strike could be costing Boeing $1 billion a week.

But Boeing chose not to answer the Ethiopian pilot’s questions beyond referring him to a public document it had already issued after the Lion Air crash. Three months after the request by Ethiopian Airlines, one of its 737 Max’s nosedived into the ground after takeoff from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s capital, killing all 157 people on board. Despite the constraints Boeing described in the response to the Ethiopian chief pilot, Boeing officials discussed numerous details of the Lion Air crash. Naoise Connolly Ryan, who lives in Ireland with her two young children, lost her husband, Mick Ryan, in the Ethiopian crash. Ryan criticized Boeing for holding back safety information from airlines, calling it criminal and suggesting it could have prevented the Ethiopian crash.

Addis Ababa, October 9, 2024 (FBC) – The report spread by certain media outlets including ‘Egypt Independent’ misreporting that there may be an earthquake around the Ethiopia Grand Renaissance Dam (GERD) is completely wrong, the Ethiopian Geological Institute revealed. The Institute revealed that there is no geological evidence that an earthquake might occur in the vicinity of the GERD. The director general of the Ethiopian Geological Institute told ENA that the report circulated by these media outlets claiming that GERD is at risk of earthquake is a complete fabrication. A Boeing 737 MAX crash that killed 156 people was caused, at least in part, by the company refusing to pass on safety information to its operator, aviation experts have revealed. The 2019 Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crash killed all passengers on board when the MAX 8 nose-dived into a field just south of the capital, Addis Ababa, and came just months after another plane in Indonesia had crashed almost identically. Now experts say that Boeing’s refusal to provide Ethiopian Airlines pilots with the same safety information shared with U.S. airlines “most likely” contributed to crash. Boeing initially suggested that the Ethiopian crash was due to pilot error–making the finding the latest blow to its battered reputation. Boeing declined to answer the Ethiopian Airlines pilot’s queries, aside from pointing him to a public document published after the Indonesian flight’s catastrophic accident, despite providing detailed briefings to pilots in the U.S. asking the same questions.

It’s not too late to preserve KC’s Black-owned restaurants (or to enjoy Black Feast Week)The recent closures of Soiree, The Krave, and Privee — Black-owned restaurants that each became a staple of Kansas City’s evolving food scene — leave a clear void that can’t be ignored, said Ryan Sorrell. The event’s goal is to provide more than just visibility for the participating restaurants — it’s about long-term sustainability. By spotlighting these local businesses, Sorrell hopes Black Feast Week will help generate more restaurant traffic beyond the two-week window, creating lasting visibility for these establishments. Specials during Black Feast Week range from Mattie’s Foods’ BBQ Bacon Chicken Sandwich to Chef Smokey’s gumbo greens with cornbread, and Teetasty Foods’ sampler plates of Egusi and Fufu. Black Feast Week is about celebrating that.”

Two years have passed since the murder of Jina (“Mahsa”) Amini, a young Kurdish-Iranian woman, at the hands of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s morality police. Amini was brutalized and killed for allegedly wearing her hijab, or head-covering, improperly – the sort of “crime” that sends a backward theocracy apoplectic with rage. Her death sparked the “Women, Life, Freedom” movement, the latest and perhaps most significant wave of protest among the millions of ordinary Iranians who have been clamoring for regime change for well over a decade, but who have so far been unable to dislodge the ruling mullahs.

U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said: “As alleged, Mohamed Bahi obstructed a federal criminal investigation by instructing witnesses to lie and then destroying evidence. The charges unsealed today should leave no doubt about the seriousness of any effort to interfere with a federal investigation, particularly when undertaken by a government employee. In or about 2024, BAHI took steps to obstruct the Federal Investigation by tampering with multiple witnesses and destroying evidence. On or about June 14, 2024, after having met with Official-1, BAHI told the Businessman that Official-1 believed that the Businessman would not cooperate with law enforcement. On or about July 24, 2024, in connection with the Federal Investigation, FBI agents executed a court-authorized search warrant at BAHI’s home and seized BAHI’s cellphone.

A severe drought, worsened by climate change, is driving pastoralists in Ethiopia’s Somali region to abandon traditional herding lifestyles in favor of urban labor, leading to significant shifts in their livelihoods. Former pastoralists express emotional ties to their traditional way of life and struggle with the demands of new jobs, reflecting the broader impacts of climate change on their identities and futures. Drought and climate change across Somali region’s drylands is forcing many, like Ahmed, to seek alternative livelihoods in farming, petty trade (selling milk, clothing, shoes, etc.) In the Somali region, approximately 3.5 million pastoralists — 55% of the population — have seen their livelihoods severely threatened. Before the drought, Ahmed relied entirely on his herd of cows, goats and camels for his family’s livelihood.

EDNF Chief: Somalia is incapable of confronting EthiopiaADDIS ABABA - The Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF) chief Field Marshal General Birhanu Jula has dismissed the capacity of Somalia to handle Ethiopia, arguing that the country does not have such an ability and capacity to do so. According to him, Somalia should first defend the sea before confronting Ethiopia. The military chief said Hassan Sheikh is "incapable" of "confronting us" and "securing the capital Mogadishu". General Jula has traditionally issued alarming statements that could trigger disintegration in the Horn of Africa region. "He should protect his seat before confronting Ethiopia with weapons supplied by Egypt," he said in a blistering verbal attack on Somalia's embattled leader during a recent interview.
